National Cyber Security

Posted on

Technology has transformed society; it has completely changed the way we communicate, conduct everyday tasks in life and so much more. Since technology seems to make these tasks more efficient, we choose to manage our affairs through it, such as our businesses. As our reliance on technology continues to grow, so do the risks associated with it. This cyber issue is not new, but it took years for the effects to really become an issue. Because of the increased dependence on technology and, as a result, an increased use of the Internet, data breaches have become ever more prevalent these days; businesses of all sizes have become more dependent on digital data and therefore more reliant on conducting their business online.

Earlier in October, it was reported that a Facebook data breach negatively affected around 30 million accounts. These hackers were able to access phone numbers, email addresses and search information. According to an article, “hackers used an automated technique to steal access tokens of about 400,000 people,” which resulted in the hackers receiving the tokens of 29 million users.* When someone steals your personal information, you feel violated. You know your phone number, name, professional information and maybe even your social security number are out for the world to find. Unfortunately, this is not the only incident when identity theft or data breach have occurred. There have been many other situations similar to this one.

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM). Over the last several years, this recognition has rapidly grown in influence and popularity. This year, the primary goal of NCSAM is to provide all Internet users with the information and tools they need to be safer and more secure online, as well as to ensure that everyone knows how to protect their personal information from occurrences like the Facebook mishap.** The goal behind this year’s effort is for Americans to have the necessary resources to stay safe online and to decrease these cyber threats. Fortunately, the list below outlines a few ways you can decrease the possibility of cyberattacks occurring:***

  • Stay Updated

One of the simplest ways to ensure you are not a victim of a data breach is to constantly update your electronic devices. Frequently updated devices are not as prone to hackers because updates provide increased security. Oftentimes, software developers will build better security into these updates

  • Strong Passwords

Devices that have longer and more complex passwords have a difficult time getting hacked. Instead of creating a simple four-letter password, create one that is not easily common. If you are worried about remembering it, write it down somewhere that no one else can find it.

  • Teach

Once you’ve done all you can to avoid the risk of cyberattacks, teach other people what you know. Spread your knowledge. There is still a multitude of people unaware of the growing prevalence of cyberattacks and the precautions to take, but if we can train people in this area, we can limit the number of people who fall victim to these breaches and hacks.

It is vital that we all work together to increase cyber security and prevent these cyberattacks from occurring. We need to understand how and what we need to do so.
