Distracted driving continues to pose a significant threat to South Carolina’s roads. Alarming statistics highlight its dangers and the urgent need for more vigorous enforcement.
This blog explores the issue of distracted driving, recent legislative efforts, and how victims can protect their rights.
South Carolina’s Alarming Ranking
In a recent survey using USAA’s SafePilot telematics data, South Carolina ranked third in the nation for the most distracted drivers. This is not a ranking to be proud of.
With a distraction rate of 16.5%—well above the national average of 12.1%—distracted driving accounted for 19% of all fatal crashes in the state in 2019, emphasizing the deadly consequences of this behavior.
Proposed Legislative Action
The “South Carolina Hands-Free and Distracted Driving Act,” set for discussion in the South Carolina House and Senate, aims to curb distracted driving by making it illegal to hold a phone while driving. Proposed penalties include a $100 fine for a first offense (up from $25) and a $200 fine plus two license points for subsequent offenses.
